About Poverty
Next Door

Do you recognize the faces of poverty across America today? The elderly woman selling jewelry at a local festival. The young entrepreneur commuting between two jobs. The veteran who can’t find steady work. The college student displaced by a hurricane. These are the people in our communities who deal with the challenges of poverty every day.

Poverty Next Door was created to explore the realities of income inequality in America, to reframe the conversation on poverty and to offer solutions toward positive change. When we really understand the plight of others, or share our own struggles openly, this compassion can change hearts, policies, and help break down economic barriers.

Microsoft News has partnered with Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity through our Story Grant program to produce this series, with the goal of creating increased awareness around this serious societal challenge and to empower our readers toward action and involvement. Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity is a non-partisan initiative, bringing together diverse perspectives from the political, policy, advocacy and foundation communities to find genuine solutions to the economic hardship confronting millions of Americans.

In this series, we explore the journeys of those around us, examining events, life situations, and cultural realities that challenge economic equality for so many.
